Why do you have to water your lawn?

Is it that important to have green grass? Don't you think it's such a waste of water? It's so extravagant don't you think?

We have international students at SCAD, and I remember the first one I met that recently came to this country was totally horrified that people waste water over in this country but turning on the faucets and leaving water run when they aren't using it immediately. That really brought to my attention how much water is wasted every day. So I will turn the water on and use it briefly, then turn it off, do what I have to do (brush my teeth, soap up my hands etc.) then turn it back on to rinse. Or I will fill the basin or a bowl (one of my sinks don't have a plug). And for the longest time I thought it was just wasteful that the people in my parents' cookie-cutter neighborhood always watered their lawns. Granted, green grass is nice, but considering that water is pretty precious, I'd rather have it to drink than to waste it on GRASS. THe grass can get it's water from the rain.

SUre right now we are in a drought, so people are "told" when they can water. Come on. Maybe a green lawn is so important to you, but it really is ridiculous. Sure we live in a prosperous country but water doesn't grow on trees. More and more it is polluted. And with little rain, it seems that people take advantage of water.

I have a friend who lives in the desert and he can't stand the people who have those lawns. In the desert? OMG people. I know. Some of you just have so much money you can buy whatever you want. One day, probably when your kids are older and have your money, they won't have the resources because it was wasted. So they will have all this money and guess what? Water will cost out the wazoo, just like the gas and oil, as well as food, electricity, etc. I don't even want to imagine.

Well that's all for my PSA......

If I lived in a "regular" home instead of a condo, my neighbors would be so pissed at me. They would probably start one of those neighborhood petitions saying that I was messing up property values or something economic like that.

My "lawn" would be whatever color it would be that nature would allow (brown, green or a shade between) and the length would vary depending upon whether I had the money to pay the neighbor kid to mow it - or the time to do it myself.

Lawn care is a waste of time, effort, money and natural resources. If God wants green grass, he'll make it rain.
